If this is the situation then you should use a filing made of metal instead of a chisel, or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

The screws that support the door latch are hard to spot, but you can usually use a screwdriver to make an insignificant hole on the trim plate and then pry the latch off. After removing the trim plate, you will be able to pull off the latch as well as the bolts that hold it and the spindle in position.

You may need to repeat this several times before the latch comes loose enough to pull out.
After the old latch is removed it should be possible to move the new latch into the slot without difficulties. Use the new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is correctly placed in the slot, aligned with the screw chambers.
